The 1960s were a tumultuous period in American history. The pressures of Civil Rights and racial equality, combined with increasingly violent political radicalism, stretched the fabric of American society. Overseas, the Cold War and the struggle to contain the further spread of Communism dominated national policy.

  • TV shows
    Popular TV shows included Star Trek (1966-1969), The Andy Griffith Show (1960-1968), Hogan's Heroes (1965-1971), Bewitched (1964-1972), Doctor Who (1963-1989), Gilligan's Island (1964-1967), The Brady Bunch (1969-1974), and The Avengers (1966-1969). The TV show American Bandstand helped introduce new artists like Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Sonny and Cher, and Smokey Robinson, and also taught popular dances.

    The 1960s saw a music revolution that made rock and roll famous, with popular musicians including Elvis, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones. The most famous rock festival of the decade was Woodstock, held in 1969.

    Baseball was very popular in the 1960s, with players like Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Carl Yastrzemski, Frank Robinson, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Bob Gibson, and Juan Marichal dominating the decade. The National Basketball Association also produced several legends, including the Boston Celtics, led by coach Red Auerbach and Bill Russell.
